Also known as Gul-i-Ra’ana, she was the wife of Pakistan’s first Prime Minister Liaquat Ali Khan. She was appointed as the Governor of Sindh in February 1973 and remained in office till February 1976.

Born as Sheila Irene Pant in 1905 in Almora, Kumaon. After completing her education, she was appointed as Professor of Economics at Indraprastha College, Delhi, in 1931. The same year she met Liaquat Ali Khan. They both married in 1932. By then she had embraced Islam and changed her name from Sheila Irene Pant to Gul I Rana.
Begum Ra’ana Liaquat Ali Khan has the distinction of being the 1st First Lady of Pakistan. She was the first lady of Pakistan from 1947 to 1951.

Begum Ra’ana Liaquat Ali Khan was an active member of Pakistan Movement. She was tasked of creating political awareness among the Muslims women. She also joined Jinnah’s Working Committee as an economical advisor.

She was the reason when a large number of women were taken in Pakistan army as nurses. During the refugees crisis. She encouraged women to come forward and asked military for their nurse training. She also encouraged girls to take part in the rifle drill, learn decoding ciphers, typing and a host of other duties so they could be useful to the society in an event of national crisis like the refugee crisis of 1947.
For the protection of women rights and their security against domestic violence Begum Ra’ana Liaquat Ali Khan founded Pakistan Women’s National Guard (PWNG). She also established the Women’s Naval Reserves in Pakistan Navy, and was appointed as the Chief Controller.
One of the most important and impressive works of Begum Ra’ana Liaquat Ali Khan was the establishment of All Pakistan Women’s Association (APWA). Unlike Pakistan Women’s National Guard (PWNG), which was disbanded due to financial crisis, the All Pakistan Women’s Association (APWA) is still functional and has achieved many landmarks in field of women rights over the years.
Begum Ra’ana Liaquat Ali Khan has also served the country as the first Muslim woman delegate to the United Nations, Pakistan’s Ambassador to the Netherlands and Pakistan’s Ambassador to Tunisia.
For her dedicated services to the country and women of the country, the Government College University of Lahore awarded her an honorary doctorate degree, Doctor of Philosophy in Economics in 1967.
Death
She died in 1990, at an age of 85 years and was buried next to her husband in Quaid Mausoleum.
