For this reason, women in the country have equally served in various department of the state. One such department is tourism and culture.

The first lady federal minister of Pakistan tourism was Begum Viqar-un-Nisa (also known as Viqar un Nisa Noon or Viqarunnisa Noon). She served in the office during Zia ul Haq regime.

Who Was Viqar un Nisa Noon?

Viqar un Nisa Noon was an Austria born Pakistani. After marrying Sir Feroz Khan Noon in 1945, she changed her name from Victoria Rekha to Viqar un Nisa and embraced Islam. She also remained first lady from 1957 – 58, when Sir Feroz Khan was in office.

What is her Social and Political Work?

After marrying Sir Feroz Khan Noon, she took active part in Pakistan Movement. She also joined the Punjab Provincial Women’s Subcommittee and start organizing rallies and processions for the Muslim League.

Her biggest diplomatic and political role and achievement was the successful accession of Gawadar from Oman to Pakistan. At that time Oman was a British Colony. She worked very hard in 1956, for the said purpose. She even met Winston Churchill the same year for lobbying at British Parliament for ‘ Gwadar port’ to be given to Pakistan and get approval from House of Lords.

During Zial ul Haq regime, Begum Viqar-un-Nisa Noon held the office of federal minister of tourism and culture for a long time.

For the development of girls education in the newly born country, she founded Viqar un Nisa College for Women, Rawalpindi West Pakistan and the Viqarunnisa Noon School and College, a prestigious school and college for girls in Dhaka, East Pakistan (today’s Bangladesh).

For her valued services to the nation and country, she was awarded Nishan e Imtiaz in 1959.

Death

Viqar un Nisa Noon passed away at the age of 79 years, in Islamabad after a prolonged illness.
